Be Cool by the Pool

Kids love playing in the water. Celebrate a birthday, the end of school or other special occasions—and let the pool take center stage!

On a hot summer day, the coolest party idea around involves swimsuit-clad kids and lots of H2O. With plenty of pool time and a menu to make mouths water, nothing under the sun offers more fun. A few pointers to help you plan:

Send a snazzy invitation. Kids know they're in for a good time when they get your invitation in the mail. Choose a water-related theme such as tropical fish. Invitations, decorations and even the menu can be infused with colorful fish shapes.

BYOBS: Remind guests to bring a bathing suit and towel. At the party, keep a stack of extra towels handy.

Banish sunburn. Send youngsters home only with good memories and a damp swimsuit. Provide sunscreen and insect repellant to prevent sunburn and bug bites.

Drink up. Water may be all around at a pool party, but be sure to provide plenty to drink too. When kids play outside on a hot day, they need plenty of fluids to keep from getting dehydrated.

Make it simple. When there's a break in the action, be prepared with easy, make-ahead tasty treats. If you're celebrating a birthday, add a colorful cake (or cupcakes) to the menu.
